Balmville and New Windsor Students Learn Fire Prevention

National Fire Prevention Week was held recently across the country and two schools in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District were able to get a special visit from local area fire departments.

On Tues,. Oct. 7, 2008, students at Balmville Media and Communications Magnet School in the Town of Newburgh learned the importance of fire prevention and safety. Members of the Middle Hope Fire Department, Good-Will Fire Department, Orange Lake Fire Department and the Town of Newburgh Fire Inspectors Office all joined forces to give demonstrations and show students what to do in case of an emergency situation. Students were shown the various parts of the fire truck in addition to learning how to crawl out of a burning building safely thanks to the fire safety trailer brought in by the Good-Will Fire Department.

On Weds., Oct. 8, 2008, the New Windsor Fire Department Quassaick Engine Company visited New Windsor Elementary School to provide fire safety tips to students. Students were allowed to get up close to the giant red fire truck and the firemen on hand were able to show students the proper protocol in the unfortunate event that a fire breaks out in their home.

A friendly volunteer from the New Windsor Fire Department Quassaick Engine Company provided students at New Windsor Elementary School with an up-close look at a fireman in uniform. According to Dave Wolfe of the NWFD, the loud noises emitted from a fireman’s uniform can sometimes startle children. Therefore, this exercise allows students to hear the breathing apparatus and see the fireman in all of his equipment.

A student volunteer helps NWFD’s Dave Wolfe demonstrate how to crawl under smoke in the event of an emergency by using a blanket to simulate smoke in the house.
