Meadow Hill’s Little Red Schoolhouse Celebrates Grand Reopening
On Sat., Oct. 18, 2008, the Grand Reopening of the Little Red Schoolhouse located at the Meadow Hill Global Explorations Magnet School was celebrated by area residents, current and past students along with faculty and staff.
The Little Red Schoolhouse was renovated with a $5,000 grant from Lowes "Toolbox for Education." The schoolhouse was built in 1975 by teachers, students and parents. It is currently used by Enriched Art students who put on a Victorian Christmas each year with art teacher Ken Nelson and former Assistant Principal Marilyn Scott. Due to the age of the building, however, it was in great need of repair. The steps were falling apart, the roof had holes, the shutters and windows needed repairing and the whole building needed to be repainted.
Meadow Hill parent Alex Csorba, along with his wife Jessica, put in many hard hours helping to rebuild the school. Csorba and family added a wishing well, horse posts and troughs which he built himself. As a student, he was one of the original builders of the schoolhouse. They completed the majority of the renovations themselves with assistance from Kevin Mulholland, who was earning his Eagle Scout badge, and several other generous parents. Csorba was presented with a painting, created by local artist Len DiVirgilio, of the schoolhouse as a thank you gift during the grand reopening.
Roger Sprague and his Bluegrass Band performed for those in attendance at the recent event. They were accompanied by former student Kathleen Parks on violin, and a current teacher aide Mary DeBerry on guitar and vocals. Also, retired teacher Lonny Myruski joined in on guitar.
According to Assistant Principal Lisa Nazzaro, the school hopes to expand the use of the schoolhouse to include lessons taught by a woman from Hill Hold in the future.
