NWPD Gives Halloween Tips to New Windsor Elementary School Students

NW K9 Roscoe Stops in for a Visit

Students at New Windsor Elementary School had a special visit recently from the New Windsor Police Department. Sergeant George Meyers IV, Officer Alonzo Montanya, Officer Christopher Deets, and Officer Frank Volpe, along with his K9 Roscoe, were on hand to teach students playground safety, the purpose and role of a police K9, and tips on how to stay safe this coming Halloween.

Officer Deets began the assembly by lecturing students on the importance of playground safety. He said that, following a rain shower, slides and steps on playgrounds in addition to wet grass can be slippery and students should play with caution. In addition, during the warm summer months the metal and plastic on playground structures and black top can be extremely hot, and students should be vigilant while playing outside.

With this week being Red Ribbon Week, Officer Montanya spoke to students about Drug Awareness before giving a lesson on how to have a safe Halloween this season. He spoke about the importance of traveling in groups with older siblings or a parents or guardians. In addition, Officer Montanya encouraged students to walk only in well-lit areas and stay on sidewalks or paths and avoiding dark areas or alleyways. Also, he said it is important to avoid homes or apartments that do not have lights on. He also spoke about the importance of never entering the home of a stranger or even a neighbor without a parent. As a last tip, Officer Montanya instructed students to have a parent or guardian inspect candy before eating it.

Officer Frank Volpe offered students a special treat with a visit from his K9 Roscoe. Roscoe, a three-and-a-half-year-old German Shepherd, is one of three K9s that the New Windsor police have within the department. Officer Volpe taught students the value of having a police dog and how police dogs are very unlike their pets at home. In an emergency, K9 Roscoe will be able to track the scent of a lost child, and if the police need assistance finding a suspect, it’s K9 Roscoe to the rescue with his powerful nose.

Members of the New Windsor Police Department made a special visit to New Windsor Elementary School earlier this week and spoke about playground safety, the purpose and role of a police K9, and tips on how to stay safe this coming Halloween.
