NFA Gallery Series Presents: A Glimpse of Bard
On Wed., Oct. 5, 2008, the Newburgh Free Academy Art Gallery held a grand opening celebration and reception for an exhibit called “A Glimpse of Bard.” The exhibit, part of the Gallery Study Series, will be on display until Tues., Nov. 25, 2008, in the NFA Art Gallery.
Gallery Studies is a new course being taught at NFA this year. It was developed by Marcy Bernstein, a visual art instructor, as part of a sabbatical project. The interdisciplinary and multi-grade program deals with all aspects of running an art gallery and working in a museum or gallery. The hands-on aspect of the program involves the students exhibiting ten shows in the student-run NFA Art Gallery. The students plan and organize the exhibition, prepare the walls, labels, and all educational materials, write press releases and design the invitations. They also lead tours and log in many extra hours working in the gallery throughout the school day. To date, there have been three shows already this year.
"A Glimpse of Bard" is the students’ visual and written responses to a field visitation to the Hessel Museum on the Bard College campus. This show is on exhibit through the month of November. In December there will be a new exhibition titled "First Impressions," creations by elementary students in Newburgh. Presently, the Gallery Studies class is mentoring Thea Bonne's 6th grade class at GAMS Tech Magnet School in a cooperative project involving the Holocaust, photography and writing. Each month there will be a new show in the NFA Art Gallery series.
