September 18, 2008 - An incident occurred on Wed., Sept. 17, shortly following Newburgh Free Academy’s student dismissal. Due to the police investigation that followed, NFA was put into lockdown status at approximately 2:30 p.m. for the students and staff who remained in the building. GAMS Tech Magnet School on Gidney Avenue and North Junior High School on Robinson Avenue were also locked down at that time. The lockdowns were lifted at approximately 3 p.m.
According to various accounts, a fight involving at least four male students began at approximately 2:22 p.m. near the corner of Fullerton and Columbus Avenues, across Fullerton Avenue from NFA. One of the students involved had not yet attended NFA this school year. A second student is serving an out-of-school suspension from NFA. A third and fourth student are assigned to the NFA Twilight Program, an alternative program that operates after the regular school day. None of these four students had entered the NFA building on Wed., Sept. 17.
Although details are still under investigation, the fight resulted in the stabbing of two of the four students mentioned above. At this time we have no knowledge of their condition. We also know that someone fired a handgun. No one was shot.
Each day the NFA administration and staff makes every effort and takes every precaution to make NFA safe for all students and staff. NFA security guards and other staff members monitor the campus during and after school hours. Such a violent incident that happened so near the school disturbs everyone. This incident will cause the staff to continue to be overly vigilant in the upcoming days and weeks into the future.
