Newburgh Summer Meals

The following information comes from the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Orange County:

Newburgh, NY -- For many kids, summer vacation comes with a thrill of anticipation. Weeks stretch ahead filled with dreams of bike rides, swimming pools, family vacations and long, lazy days hanging out with friends. For millions of kids in America, however, it’s a much different story. For kids living in low-income families struggling to put food on the table, summer’s bright promise has been replaced with worry, anxiety and the threat of hunger. Hunger doesn’t take a break, and neither does the Newburgh Enlarged City School Districts’ Food Service Team as they fill the “summer hunger gap” with FREE meals at community locations throughout the city.

“From 2014 to 2015 we increased by almost 15,000 meals and we are hoping that with new sites, more marketing and great partnerships we will see a larger increase this Summer,” said Caitlin Lazarski, Food Service Directors at NECSD. “We can, and must, do more to increase participation in these programs. So please spread the word and join us!”

Join Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Eat Smart New York Program and the Newburgh Enlarged City School District along with numerous community partners and hundreds of youth at the Delano Hitch Recreational Park on July 6, 2016 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to celebrate the summer meals program and show firsthand the impact summer meal programs have. Youth will have food, fun and friends as they go around to various activity stations, play games and conclude with a water bottle or jump rope to take home to encourage healthy habits this summer.

“Collaboration and coordination with our local, state and national partners to raise awareness about the SFSP program in Newburgh (and the Hudson Valley) is critical, as it may be a child’s only opportunity for a healthy meal.” said Stefanie Hubert Eat Smart New York Project Manager.

The Summer Food Service Program sites and times vary throughout the city. For a full list of locations and sites please visit http://cceorangecounty.org/food/summer-food-service-programs
