Balmville and Gardnertown Students Graduate
From Annual D.A.R.E Program
Recently, two special D.A.R.E graduation ceremonies were held for students at Balmville Elementary School and Gardnertown Fundamental Magnet School in Newburgh. Town of Newburgh D.A.R.E Officer Sally Black, led the graduation ceremonies and spoke with students and parents about the importance of the program for youth at such a critical time in their life.
Officer Black explained that the goal of the D.A.R.E program is to bring awareness to students about problems with drugs, violence, gangs and other issues within their own community or neighborhoods. Students are also taught to look to the future and focus on making the right decisions to achieve their goals or dreams. Officer Black spoke to students about the harmful effects that drugs, alcohol, and gang activity, can have on their life overall, if not lead them to an early death or incarceration.
Prior to the culmination of both of the graduation ceremonies, Officer Black invited a few students selected by their teachers to read their final essays. In addition, each student received a certificate acknowledging their completion of the D.A.R.E program.
