Horizons-on-the-Hudson Students Pen Pal with Students in Mexico

Experience Encourages Students to Become International Thinkers

Students in Klaus Solomon’s fifth grade class at Horizons-on-the-Hudson Magnet School in Newburgh are broadening their horizons one letter at a time in a newly established relationship with students from an all-girl school, Instituto Rosedal Vista Hermosa, located in Mexico.

According to Solomon, while on a summer vacation whale shark encounter off the island of Holobox, he met a family that would change his life forever. After suggesting that their young daughter, who was roughly the same age as his students, become a pen pal with his students the idea took off. The students partnered with the young girl’s class in Mexico with each student receiving a pen pal of their own. Solomon explains that although the students come from different backgrounds the experience is enriching the lives of his students tremendously. “Having this opportunity to connect to students in another country is a real lifetime treat for them, and it is having quite an impact on their lives,” Solomon explained.

Through a series of letters and photos, the students at both schools are able to see what life is like in another country. According to the students in Solomon’s class, it turns out that their lives are more similar than they are different.

Solomon said the project stemmed from his chance meeting with the young family in Holobox and his hope of creating “internationally minded-students.” He explained that this experience fits perfectly into Horizons-on-the-Hudson’s International Baccalaureate curriculum. As a candidate for the International Baccalaureate program, the school focuses on opening students eyes to world cultures and issues as well as implementing curriculum that is student centered, hands-on, inquiry based, and follows New York State Standards under a structured Program of Inquiry.

Solomon said the project allows his students to share their thoughts and ideas with the students in Mexico and discuss what is happening in other parts of the world. “This is a perfect example of what the International Baccalaureate program is all about,” Solomon explained.
