Horizons on the Hudson Students Meet NYS Senator William Larkin

Recently, students in the third grades and accelerated second and third grades at Horizons on the Hudson Magnet School in Newburgh met with New York State Senator William Larkin to learn about the Purple Heart. Senator Larkin spoke to the children about the significance and symbolism of the Purple Heart Medal, the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, and the Purple Heart Stamp. He spoke about the importance of recognizing and remembering those who served our country with dignity and honor.

The award was originally designed by George Washington and called the Badge of Military Merit. Over the years, the medal has undergone changes in design. Senator Larkin brought a Purple Heart Medal for the children to see, in addition to framed prints and sheets of Purple Heart Stamps. Since 1782, it is estimated that 1.7 million Purple Hearts were awarded. Senator Larkin’s presentation provided students with a first hand look at symbols that hold meaning to our culture, and an understanding of the significance of honoring and remembering our country’s veterans.
