“Pig Day” Celebrates the Life of Former New Windsor School Teaching Assistant
New Windsor Elementary School teacher Ellen Whitaker, her students, and faculty members came together on a recent school day to celebrate the life of her former teaching assistant Debbie Steinberger. Steinberger, a former teaching assistant to Whitaker passed away from breast cancer in 2002.
According to Whitaker and New Windsor School faculty members, Steinberger is remembered for not only her kindness and zest for life, but for her love of pigs and pig memorabilia. Now, each year in her honor, a special celebration is held on March 1 also known as National Pig Day, where students in Whitaker’s class come together to pig-out and celebrate the life of the former teaching assistant. The annual celebration includes teaching students pig facts, jokes, trivia and enjoying pig art work and decorations. This year the special event included a cake with the one and only Miss Piggy.
“We came together today to celebrate the memory of Debbie Steinberger pig-lover extraordinaire,” Whitaker said of her beloved former colleague.
