NFA Students Support TON Animal Shelter This Holiday Season

Students from the Newburgh Free Academy Interact Club and the Bilingual Honors Society recently delivered over 380 cans/bags of dog and cat food to the Town of Newburgh Animal Shelter in an effort to help the homeless animals this holiday season. According to Interact Club Advisor Mildred Guitierrez-Colón, “Our goal was to provide the animals at the Town of Newburgh Animal Shelter a bountiful Thanksgiving. Thanks to the generosity of the Newburgh Free Academy faculty, staff, and students we believe that we have met that challenge.”

According to shelter employees, the donations were greatly appreciate especially with the unprecedented number of animals in the shelter at this time. The amount of animals in the shelter has more than doubled since last year due to the bad economy explained shelter employees. In total, the shelter is home to roughly 30 cats and 8 to 10 dogs currently. As students toured the facility it was evident that the friendly pets were not only homeless animals that had been on the streets, but household pets that were unfortunately surrendered. Guitierrez-Colón said that the students hope to continue their partnership with the animal shelter in the future.

Shelter staff members explained that necessities such as blankets, towels, rawhide chew toys, and food are continuously needed and appreciated. In addition, volunteers are always in need at the shelter and jobs vary from fosters homes for kittens and walking dogs to working on socializing the animals at the shelter. Those interested in volunteering at the animal shelter are required to meet the 16 year old age minimum. Please contact that Town of Newburgh Animal Shelter at 561-3344 for more information on how to donate or volunteer.
