NFA Announces Special Blood Drive
Donations Support Critical Medical Conditions
This winter season Newburgh Free Academy students will be hosting a special blood drive on Thurs., Dec. 17, 2009, from 2:30 pm until 7:30pm in the South Cafeteria. ALYX Machines that specifically collect red blood cells will be on hand for donors seeking to give the ultimate gift. Red blood cell transfusions are used for critical medical conditions which include trauma patients, and people undergoing heart-bypass surgery, chemotherapy, and organ transplants. Requirements to be an ALYX donor are as follows:
Males need to be at least 5’1” and weigh at least 136 pounds.
Females must be at least 5’5” and weigh at least 156 pounds.
Whole blood donations that evening will also be accepted for those that do not meet the above mentioned requirements. To qualify to donate whole blood, people must be at least 110 pounds.
