NFA Black Box Theater Presents “The Cherry Orchard”
Students from Newburgh Free Academy will present Anton Chekhov's “The Cherry Orchard” from Thurs., Nov. 12 through Sat., Nov. 14, 2009, in NFA’s Black Box Theater. “The Cherry Orchard”, a play about the human condition, focuses around a family that is trying to prevent their beloved family estate from being auctioned off. The production is subject to debate in the theater world regarding whether or not it should be considered a comedy or tragedy explains Director Terry Sandler. Sandler adds that the performance is similar to the modern day sitcoms and that audience members can relate to all of the characters in the production.
For this performance three separate locations an orchard, nursery, and ballroom have been created on the stage and lighting plays a more important role than ever. The Black Box Theater creates an intimate canvas for the performance allowing the innovative stage design to make audience members feel as though they are part of the production and in fact in the cherry orchard.
In addition to NFA’s production this week, Sandler’s former teacher while attending SUNY New Paltz David Cohen will have his Orange County Community College students also performing “The Cherry Orchard”. Sandler explained that although the text is the same the interpretation is different for both of the performances. Recently, the two casts came together for a workshop which discussed their upcoming performances as well as the Michael Chekhov Technique which involves physical acting. Sandler expressed his high regard for his students following the workshop, “The high school students were definitely ready to play with the big kids that’s for sure.”
