NFA Kicks Off 2009 Marathon Project

On Thurs., April 23, 2009 a brand new Newburgh Free Academy running club under the auspices of the Marathon Project held their first ever “Kick-Off” event. Adult mentors and students came together to discuss the role of the mentors, student participation, goal setting, and team building. Susanne O’Neil from C.A.P.E.(Council on Addiction Prevention and Education of Dutchess County, Inc) was present to explain and inspire the program to students and mentors.

The program is sponsored by the Council on Addiction Prevention and Education of Dutchess County, Inc., and is an innovative distance running program that pairs adult mentors with youth in the Poughkeepsie and Beacon communities, as well as the DC Department of Probation, Northeast Community Center in Millerton and The Poughkeepsie Children’s Home and now Newburgh Free Academy.

The Marathon Project students began training in May and will soon be hitting the streets of Newburgh and at some of the many local races. The club promotes healthy lifestyle, fighting against childhood obesity, drug use and provides opportunities for students to set and achieve goals, explore avenues for character development, improve health, and build positive student/adult relationships through mentoring.

Participants within this program will also take part in some MHRRC, Orangerunnersclub.org and locally sponsored races while they are “in training”. These races will be a wonderful developmental asset for youth to connect with our community. The final goal for students involved in the project will be running in the Philadelphia ½ or Full Marathon in November 2009.
