1-2-3! “Math in Careers” Focuses on the Value of Math for Newburgh Free Academy and North Junior High School Students
Students from Newburgh Free Academy and North Junior High School recently had the opportunity to learn about the role that mathematics will take in their life during “Math in Careers,” two separate forums held recently on April 21 at NFA and April 28 at NJH. Arreda Cotten, Newburgh Enlarged City School District Math Coach and Coordinator of “Math in Careers,” planned the events hoping to encourage and motivate youth with opportunities of connecting math with future career choices. Students often ask teachers to connect the purpose of learning the fundamentals of Algebra and Geometry to the real world setting. These forums provided students an opportunity to ask questions of community business members, who responded with the real world connections. This reinforced the students need to be successful in math.
According to Cotten, the events were well received by students and organizers, who hope to have more math forums in the future. Community members who spoke at either of the events included a service manager, an insurance agent, an event producer, a business developer, and two architects. Local businesses that donated food for the day included Rockland Bakery of Newburgh and Price Chopper.
