New York Blood Center distributes more than 448, 000 blood products to Westchester, Hudson Valley, Long Island, New York City, and New Jersey hospitals. The need for blood is constant, in spite of donation fluctuations caused by winter weather and other factors. Hospital use of blood products remains high - due to surgeries, emergencies and care of cancer patients. About one in seven people entering a hospital needs blood. The shelf life of platelets is only five days; red blood cells expire within 42 days.
There is such a large gap between those that donate and the blood used in our hospitals. Donate blood to give cancer, leukemia, transplant, and trauma patients a fighting chance. Please schedule an appointment to donate blood on April 14, 2010 and help save lives in your community. We hope to obtain 50 donations and we can’t do it without your support.
- You must be between the ages of 16 and 75 to donate blood
- (16 year olds need a NYBC permission form signed by a parent and anyone over 76 needs a note from a doctor).
- You must weigh at least 110 pounds.
- Please hydrate and eat well before donating blood.
- Remember to bring I.D.
- If you have medical eligibility questions please call the New York Blood Center at 1-800-688-0900.
