What is Dual Language? What will it look like at West Street School?
Dual Language is learning a second language while strengthening and maintaining a native language. At West Street School Kindergarten English speaking children will have the opportunity to learn Spanish as a Second Language along with Spanish speaking children who will learn English as a Second Language.
Students in all 4 Kindergarten classes will be linguistically mixed (50% Native English and 50% Native Spanish).
Both groups of Native speakers will receive initial literacy instruction in both languages (English and Spanish). Content areas will be received in both languages in the respective designated language room (Spanish classroom/English classroom).
Consistency in format of this program is critical in order for it to be successful. Initially it will seem difficult but as students get used to the routine they find their comfort level and begin to show signs of acquiring a second language. That is the ultimate goal of the West Street School Dual Language Program.
