Audit of Curriculum Update

Press Release
January 22, 2008 — Work continues on the Newburgh Enlarged City School District’s “Audit of Curriculum” (AOC) sponsored and paid for by the New York State Education Department. The AOC will result in a three-year plan that is aimed at continuing the district’s ongoing efforts to improve student learning in the areas of English Language Arts for English Language Learners and Special Education English Language Arts.

The district is in the process of conducting the “Survey of Enacted Curriculum” (SEC) with teacher volunteers. The teachers attend a session that provides training as to how to participate in the survey, the registration of the participants, and the completion of the online survey. The results of the SEC will prove to be an important collection of data concerning modifications to the district’s English Language Arts curriculum.

A second area of ongoing AOC activity also relates to data collection. The district’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction has been compiling and organizing curriculum-related documents and submitting them to the district’s independent auditors. These documents will be reviewed and analyzed as another important source of data that will contribute to the AOC. The three-year plan that results from the AOC will be implemented in all of the schools in the district beginning in the 2008-09 school year.
