“Read Across America” Celebrates the Life of Dr. Seuss
A handful of Newburgh Free Academy students made a special visit to Balmville Elementary School recently as part of the annual Read Across America event. The students, either Balmville alumni or members of the NFA Future Educators’ Club, visited the students as part of the annual event which celebrates the life of Dr. Seuss. The event, which is usually held on March 2, was postponed this year due to the weather, but the gracious high school students were able to schedule another day to come celebrate with the eager young students in the Kindergarten, first and second grades.
Read Across America aims to motivate children to read in addition to helping students master basic reading skills. NFA students bonded with their young new friends by reading classic favorites such as The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, Horton Hears a Who, and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.
Balmville teacher Robert Conti explained that in addition to celebrating the legacy of Dr. Seuss the program allows the younger students to see first hand “reading” role models from the high school in addition to their classroom teachers. “I think it’s great for the younger students to see that a love of reading goes on with you even once you leave these classrooms and go on to other schools,” he explained.
