“Week of the Young Child” Celebrated at NECSD Pre-K Centers

The Newburgh Pre-K Centers at Washington Street and Renwick Street joined together recently as part of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) in celebration of the Week of the Young Child, held Mon., April 12 through Fri., April 16, 2010. The Week of the Young Child highlights the importance of families, early childhood professionals, and communities working together to support every child’s healthy development and academic growth. This year holds a special significance for the event since it falls during a year that commemorates the 40th Anniversary of the Universal Pre-K program.

Students from the two schools came together on Mon., April 14, 2010, to kick of the week’s festivities with a morning and afternoon parade around the Washington Street Pre-K site. A proclamation was read by Newburgh Enlarged City School District’s Superintendent of Schools Dr. Annette M. Saturnelli and Deputy Superintendent of Schools Ralph A. Pizzo announcing the Week of the Young Child following the parades. Traditional Pre-K songs were sung and students shared in the company of their friends, families, and teachers.

Later in the week, special themed days such as Pajama Day, Hat Day and Stuffed Animal Day were held for students. On Friday, a special puppet show performed by “The Puppet People” from Schenectady was held as part of the grand finale for Pride Day. In addition, guest readers visited both sites throughout the week to read to individual classes.
