Newburgh Free Academy Class of 2010 Leaves Lasting Impression
The energy was overwhelming at the 2010 Newburgh Free Academy graduation ceremony held on Academy Field on Thurs., June 24, 2010. Students, NFA faculty, and Newburgh Enlarged City School District officials triumphantly marched across the field under the hot summer sun to the applause of friends, family, and loved ones. In total, roughly 650 students enthusiastically made their way to the stage to accept their diplomas during the commencement celebration.
During the commencement exercises, Newburgh Free Academy Principal Peter Copeletti gave those unfamiliar with the Class of 2010 a glimpse into the young students’ accomplishments during their tenure at Newburgh Free Academy.
According to Copeletti, the Class of 2010 had many accomplishments academically with over $100,000 in scholarships and 80% of the class continuing on to college in September. In addition, many of the graduates will be entering the workforce utilizing skills acquired at NFA in fields such as construction, automotive, culinary, fashion and cosmetology. Copeletti also explained that the class also produced outstanding student musicians and athletes. In total, there were12 student musicians selected to all county, six to all state, and two graduates were named to the New York State Honor Band. The student athletes in the class also represented NFA by winning four Orange County League and Section 9 championships – New York State Championships in Boys Soccer and Basketball - individual state titles in swimming and track - and a powerhouse 4 X 400M relay team.
Beyond the doors of the classrooms at NFA, the graduating class participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Carly’s Kids Day, Empty Bowls a Hudson Valley Food Bank Project, and assisted with the rebuilding of the Newburgh community through Habitat for Humanity. In addition, the graduating class took an active role supporting the Haitian Relief Fund following the devastating earthquake earlier in the school year. For students at NFA, helping others in their community proved to be an important facet in their education and they illustrated this by donating more pints of blood to the New York State Blood Bank than any other high school in the tri-state area for the eighth consecutive year.
“So to our graduates – you are poised on an exciting threshold - whether you enter the working world, join the military or move on to higher education, all hold an open door that will lead you through life. Take the time along the way – no matter what path you choose to make the right decisions - don’t be afraid to change directions - and do what you truly have a passion for. Take the time to think about all the things your parents, teachers and friends did for you to arrive at this important point in your lives - and all you did for them. Reflect on what you have learned and use it –positively – purposefully,” Copeletti explained to the graduates in closing.
