The Audit of Curriculum

NEW YORK STATE AUDIT OF CURRICULUM

June 24, 2008

The Audit of Curriculum is a school district self-analysis of its written, taught, and tested curriculum. It is a New York State Education Department supported process to develop and implement an action plan for improving student learning.

Federal “No Child Left Behind” education regulations require that all students will be proficient in English Language Arts and Mathematics by the 2013-2014 academic year. Proficiency is based on adequate yearly progress benchmarks. A significant number of New York State school districts have fallen behind in progressing toward meeting the English Language Arts No Child Left Behind requirement, specifically for English Language Learners and Students With Disabilities. The Newburgh Enlarged City School District is one such school district.

This is the third year that the New York State Education Department has offered the Audit of Curriculum process to school districts. This year the Newburgh schools are participating along with twelve other school districts. All thirteen school districts share in common the need to improve English Language Arts achievement among English Language Learners and Students with Disabilities. Each of the two preceding years, the school districts participating in the Audit of Curriculum also shared the same need with the same groups of students. The need is not specific to any one school district. It is common to the way in which education addresses English Language arts with these identified student populations.

Co-facilitating Newburgh’s action planning and collaborative plan implementation is Learning Point Associates, a research-based, non-profit educational support agency. Its assistance is funded by the New York State Education Department.
