Fostertown Hosts a Tournament of Books

Books

Fostertown hosted a Tournament of Books where 16 children’s books vied for the championship title “2020 Book of the Year”! The Tournament of Books, which was structured like a NCAA tournament bracket,  started in March while we were in school but was completed virtually once we transitioned to remote learning.  The event was created and coordinated by Fostertown Reading Specialist, Michelle Dominguez.

16 teachers volunteered their time and digitally recorded a book reading using screencastify. The daily readings were placed into a Tournament Google Classroom where students listened to the teacher read aloud a story.  Every other day, the students selected a favorite book using a Google Form.  Stories advanced and winners where announced with a celebratory music accompaniment.

The Tournament was an exciting part of the day both in school and while at home during remote learning!  We are excited to announce that the 2020 Book of The Year was The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors written by Drew Daywalt.  This book was selected and read by Fostertown 5th Grade teacher, Amanda Adamonis.  A big thank you goes out to all the teachers who participated and supported this event.

We look forward to it becoming a yearly tradition.
