Important Information Regarding South Middle School’s New Status as a School in Receivership
Dear South Middle School students, families, faculty, and staff,
The New York State Education Department (NYSED) has designated South Middle School as a School under Superintendent Receivership.
What is Superintendent Receivership?
Under Commissioner’s Regulation §100.19, schools that have been identified as persistently struggling (Comprehensive Support and Improvement - CSI) for a consecutive number of years are placed under the management of the Superintendent as Receiver to improve academic performance. South Middle School has been designated as a CSI school (identified as persistently struggling) for more than 15 years.
Why was South Middle School Designated?
School designation is determined based on several criteria. These measurements include:
- Student average achievement;
- Core subject performance;
- English language learners' proficiency;
- Student growth (for elementary and middle schools); and
- Attendance index
What Changes Will Occur?
As a school in Superintendent’s Receivership, we will:
- Hold a Public Hearing: We invite you to attend a public hearing on Wednesday, February 25th, at 6:00pm at South Middle School to discuss this new status.
- Establish a Community Engagement Team: A team of parents, staff, and community members will be formed to provide recommendations for school improvement. Click this link if you would like to be considered for the Community Engagement Team.
- Develop a Plan: A school improvement plan will be created to focus on student achievement and increased learning experiences.
What This Means for Your Child
The focus of the receivership is to provide increased support and resources to improve the quality of instruction. Your child's education remains our top priority, and we are committed to working with you to ensure their success.
If you have any questions, please attend the upcoming public hearing or complete this form to submit your questions. Responses will be posted on our district webpage with information about this subject matter.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jackielyn Manning Campbell
Superintendent/Receiver
