Temple Hill Academy Scholars Learn from DC/Marvel Writer
In celebration of Read-Across-America at Temple Hill Academy, Mr. Josiah Byrne and his 3rd-grade students invited and had the pleasure of welcoming DC/Marvel Writer Ron Marz to discuss being a writer as an occupation, the importance of reading and writing, and also to read to the class.
Marz spoke to students about how he started as a newspaper writer, but through a friendship with legendary comic book writer and artist Jim Starlin, he was encouraged to try his hand at comic book writing. Marz said having a mentor when starting a career can be instrumental to your success, as Starlin mentored him. Marz said once he began writing for comic books and graphic novels…it has been a 35-year journey that is far from over.
Marz, who read to students from his home office in Upstate New York, had this to say about the experience of virtually meeting with the students: “I was absolutely thrilled to participate in Read Across America because one of the ways I learned to read as a kid was by reading comics. There’s something magical about words and pictures together. I hope my reading helped some of the students discover that”.
Mr. Byrne prepared students in advance, discussing Ron Marz and what he does as a comic book writer. They also previewed some of his work. Students then prepared questions ahead of time and had the opportunity to ask Marz themselves. It was a great experience for the students! The interaction and level of interest were enriching.
