Career and Technical Education (CTE) Spotlight on Computer Science and Coding

Today, we are featuring the NFA Computer Science and Coding Pathway as we continue to celebrate National Career and Technical Education Month!

Scholars who are part of the NFA Computer Science and Coding Pathway learn essential skills that will prepare them for both college and career in computer science fields. Scholars learn web design and animation using Adobe suite systems. Scholars also learn programming using Python and Java, creating their own websites and more. Additionally, scholars create video games and volunteer to engage younger scholars with computer science and math skills during the annual Hour of Code event

Computer Technology and Coding is taught by Mrs. Elizabeth Cappello. In September 2020, Ms. Cappello was named an Amazon Cloud Ambassador. Additionally, in February 2020, Ms. Thomas-Cappello attended a prestigious Air Force event called JROTC-CS Demonstration Project which included a dedicated workshop using the proven CSforALL SCRIPT Framework. The SCRIPT — the Strategic CSforALL Resource & Implementation Planning Tool — is a framework to guide teams of district administrators, school leaders, and educators through a series of collaborative visioning, self-assessment and goal-setting exercises to create or expand upon a computer science education implementation plan for their students.

Scholars in the Computer Science and Coding pathway will take courses: Introduction to Computer Science, Motion Graphics and Animation for the Web, Web Design I, and Programming - Java and Python in addition to their high school curriculum. Scholars who are interested in Computer Science also have the opportunity to apply for the NFA Marist Early College High School (ECHS) program that begins in 9th grade and allows scholars to earn up to a full year of college credit in Computer Science. The NFA Marist ECHS program is offered at NFA during the school year and at the Marist College Campus for a summer session.
