Newburgh Free Academy Welcomes Guest Barbers
Newburgh Free Academy welcomed guest barbers for a demonstration for their scholars. Scholars in the Cosmetology and Barbering programs gathered in the Eagles Nest to learn from professionals in their areas of interest. Mr. Casey Terramocia demonstrated a hair cut and talked scholars through his approach and methods throughout the demonstration.
Mr. Joe Nati from Hattori Hanzo Shears discussed shear theory and shear knowledge as well as selection of tools and demonstrated correct positioning when using certain tools. Mr. Nati demonstrated knuckle placement on the tools and discussed muscle health and development.
Mr. Terramocia started cutting hair at 15 and continued throughout high school. He is a trained cosmetologist and learned barbering techniques to enhance his offerings. The aspects of his high school development that he stressed to our students was learning how to cut hair, build clientele, and be nice to people. Mr. Terramocia also demonstrated how to set up lines, the types of clippers to choose and use at different points of the cut and bone anatomy of the head and placement of lines and fades.
Throughout the presentation, both guests discussed various aspects of being a barber or cosmetologist – from booking appointments, music selection, techniques, billing, product sales, and branding.
“You touch people at very important times in their lives. They come to you before their wedding, big events, interviews, an upcoming date that they’re excited about. It’s important to make them feel good, so they come back – and they tell their friends. That’s how you build your client base and can begin to charge more for that experience.” Mr. Joe Nati, Hattori Hanzo Shears
