NECSD Math Meets Season Recap
Eighty-one NECSD fifth grade scholars across the district were selected to participate in the 2019 Math Meet Competitions at the Board of Education. Nine students were selected to participate from each elementary school, based on NYS Grade 4 Math Test Scores, iReady scores, report cards and teacher recommendations.
During each of these meets, which were held from January to May, students were mixed up into nine teams and each team had a representative from all nine elementary schools. The opening meet began with an icebreaker, where the students had to create five congruent squares using various shapes. Students then decided on a team name, created a poster to represent their team, and worked through a practice problem.
During each math meet competition, one each month for 3 months, students worked together to solve high level math tasks. The competitions ended with an elaborate Escape the Room challenge. During each meet, students worked in triads at each team to solve and communicate their mathematical understanding of various problems. Students were scored on mathematical knowledge, strategic thinking, and communication.
Points were accumulated during each competition and the winning team, Mathletes, was announced at the culminating Escape the Room event and will be recognized at the June 4th Board of Education meeting.
