GAMS First & Third Grade Scholars Collaborate on Projects Inspired by Authors
GAMS scholars from Mrs. Purdy’s class have been working with their third grade friends from Ms. Johnson/Ms. Holzapple's class as reading buddies this year. To take it a step further, they coordinated two different author skype sessions last week. The first session was on Monday, 5/20 with Katey Howes, author of "Be a Maker" and the second was on 5/22 with author Sarah Aronson and her book "Just Like Rube Goldberg."
The teachers researched some examples of Rube Goldberg inspired machines and then provided students with a variety of recyclables and craft supplies and set our students to work. In groups of 4 students, they had to collaborate to decide on a design and a desired outcome. Then, students were given an opportunity to test their machines to see whether or not they were successful. If machines were not successful, they had to identify why and go back to the drawing board to figure out how to address their problem. Scholars collaborated, persevered and then had to present their projects to their peers.
