Heritage Middle School Participates in River of Words STEAM Program
Heritage Middle School team 6C participates in the River of Words STEAM program offered at Beacon's beautiful Dennison Point, thanks to a grant received by the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. The 6th graders took a class about testing the Hudson River water for Ph, Nitrates, and Phosphates. They were scientists. Students then actually GOT INTO the Hudson River (hip waders and all) and fished as they learned about the river. Students then proceeded to work on nature and river poetry with 2017/2018 Dutchess County Poet Laureate, POET GOLD. What an honor! It was one of the best trips we have been on, and we had perfect weather! The scholars had a wonderful day testing ph levels and possible pollution of water in our estuary, using waders to try to catch fish, identification of fish, and immersing themselves in the outdoors using their 5 senses and then turning that into poetry.
