NFA West Scholars Learn from Board of Education Members
Newburgh Free Academy West Campus welcomed two members of our Board of Education to share their experiences.
Aishah Alshaikh and Melanie Rodriguez, both 9th grade scholars at NFA West, introduced the panelists, president, Ms. Carole Mineo and vice president, Ms. Susan Prokosch. The Board members answered general questions and questions posed by scholars in the audience. Scholars were eager to ask questions. Speakers answered about 10 questions from student audience members.
One piece of advice that was given was that scholars should “be ready, be willing, and be open to change.” Ms. Susan Prokosch
Ms. Mineo encouraged scholars in the audience to be persistent in all they do. ”Keep going if you struggle, if you fail, and even if you succeed - keep going.”
Both board members highlighted the concept that NFA West gives choice and gives opportunity for scholars to be responsible for their education and for their behavior. Additionally, the speakers highlighted NFA West as a place to grow and blossom. “NFA West is a place for everyone to feel welcome and be able to develop themselves personally and professionally - students, teachers, staff, administrators – everyone.” Ms Susan Prokosch
Each week, scholars learn from school and community members about career paths, allowing scholars to discover opportunities to reflect on for their future path. Board members shared personal and professional experiences as well as their support of the Big Picture Learning program.
