Heritage Middle School Teams Up with the New York Jets
Heritage Middle School has teamed up with the New York Jets in the 2019 NFL season to prevent bullying in school. Heritage is part of the “Jets Upstander of the Week Program,” which awards two tickets and a parking pass to a New York Jets home game to students who are “doing the right thing in school and de-escalating any bullying and aggressive situations." Students are nominated for this award by their teachers.
Over the summer, eighth grade social studies teacher, Mr. Chris Marino completed a Bullying Symposium and training presented by the New York Jets at Met Life Stadium. The reward for completion was 28 tickets and parking passes to hand out in school. Heritage principal Lynnette Brunger stated, “Mr. Marino has brought a wonderful opportunity to Heritage Middle School. Students are selected by faculty and staff to be an Upstander of the week. Because of Mr. Marino's enthusiasm and commitment to anti-bullying, some of our students have earned the privilege to attend a professional football game. And attending a pro game is a once in a lifetime opportunity for many that they won't forget.”
The Jets are undefeated when Heritage students attend the game on Sunday, November 24, 2019. Seven Heritage Middle School families made their way through the rain to Met Life Stadium to see the Jets beat the Oakland Raiders 34 – 3. 6th grader KyRen Neil-Warren quoted, “I had a great time, the game was fun. And, I got to see Jamal Adams play.” Seventh grader Jax Pagano said, “The view from our seats was good. I liked it a lot”.
Winners of the Jets Upstander of the Week Award to date include Jax Pagano, Jonah Colandrea, Christopher Andrade, Joey Fabiano, KyRen Neil-Warren, Leiyla Barthe, Tyrese Sanchez, Jayden Bell, Tyler Kenison, John Cook, Joe Hughes, Kevin Vega, Mekhi Heinz, and Indin Clarke.
