Heritage Middle School Newsletter - February/March Edition
Letter from the Principal
Dear Heritage Families,
As we endure the winter months outside and our up and down temperatures, we are committed to learning and celebrating achievements at Heritage as we enter into the second semester and the 3rd 10 week marking period!
We will be celebrating our students with Perfect Attendance and those scholars who have been on High Honor and Honor Rolls with a breakfast provided by the PTO.
Each year SUNY Orange provides schools in Orange County to nominate students for the Sojourner Truth Awards. We are proud to let you know over 50 students from Heritage were nominated!
In an effort to maintain the safety & security of all students we have put some measures in place. We have banned open water containers being brought to school. Students may bring in an empty recyclable container & fill it at the water stations or a sealed drink/beverage. Cell phones have become an issue with students having them out, texting, going on social media and having earbuds in. The BOE Policy does not allow this at the K-8 level. We will be following the BOE Policy moving forward. We have given students warnings for the last week of what the expectation is and that we will be following through. (Please see the link to the BOE Policy on the other side). Students who do not comply with the Electronic Device policy will receive consequences. We thank you for supporting our safety of all students and look forward to seeing you in March at some of our planned events!
Until Next Time,
Lynnette Brunger

New York State ELA, Math & Science Assessments
The NECSD and Heritage Middle School will be participating in the NYS assessments in March, April and May. The results of these assessments are NOT held against students or teachers; rather they assist teachers in targeting learning for students. Students benefit from practicing the life skill of being able to take a test and perform well and building their stamina for concentrating for a period of time. Being able to perform well on a standardized test is a critical skill for passing Regents, SATs, permit for a driving license and tests to receive a license for a skill (plumbing, cosmetology, electrician).
Our students are excited seeing the progress they made on their iReady ELA and Math assessments and are looking forward to seeing the same on their NYS assessments. We are celebrating their successes and look forward to continued growth! Teams will have students who take the exams participating in fun activities to celebrate their accomplishments after the completion of these assessments.
