NFA Main Orchestra Celebrates Music in our Schools Month!
The NFA Main Orchestra under the direction of Monica Antonelli-Guido, is rehearsing the Waltz No. 2 from Suite for Variety Stage Orchestra by Dmitri Shostakovich.
Orchestra students are spaced 6 feet apart and Mrs. Guido accompanies them by filling in on various instrument parts so that students can experience harmony in their repertoire. Students attending the Google Meet class play along with their microphones muted as the deficiencies in technology make it impossible to play simultaneously.
In the room are Gold Cohort students - Isabella Delgado, violin 2, Elizabeth Mahoney, viola and Kelli Coughlin, viola.
Playing from home - Isabel Borges, cello, Hannah Cullen, violin 1, Angela Duong, violin 2, Grace Flynn, violin 1, Sage Galati, violin 1, May Islam, viola, Jasmine Ngo, viola, Jessica Ngo, violin 2, Yamilet Palacios, violin 2, David Peterson, violin 2, Alison Rall, violin 1, Jalynn Sanchez, viola, Ghaniya Shahkhan, violin 2, Hayley Steindorf, violin 2, Angela Torres, viola and Daniel Valenzuela, violin 2.
Students are commended for their efforts for continuing to pursue their music studies despite the numerous challenges they and their teacher face daily. Often the bumps in the road are met with humor and grace but we long for the day when we can perform together safely. Until then we will soldier on!
All of this is harder with Covid but #MusicIsHappening!
More about Music in Our Schools Month:
This March, music educators and music students will be celebrating music education in their school communities demonstrating how “Music. The Sound of My Heart” resonates with them. This is the theme of the 2021 observance of Music In Our Schools Month®. The impact of music education on the lives of students during this particular school year, unlike any other, is evident in how the social-emotional benefits have carried them through the pandemic and brought joy in their communities.
The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) recognizes March as the thirty-sixth annual Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM®). Since 1985, MIOSM has been observed as a yearly month-long celebration when schools and communities celebrate music in their local schools and the educators who dedicate themselves to bringing music into the lives of students every day.
Every day, in music programs across the United States, music educators dedicate themselves to reaching all students with life-changing musical experiences. What parents, administrators, and the wider community have not always had the opportunity to observe, however, is the months of practice and rehearsals, and the process of learning that takes place in the music classroom—whether virtual or distanced in person.
