Newburgh Free Library to Host 'Bridge Talk' in Remembrance of Tulsa Race Massacre
In 1921, Tulsa’s Greenwood District “Black Wall Street” was one of the most affluent black communities in America. However, on May 31 and June 1, 1921, a white mob attacked Greenwood and as a result nearly every significant structure within the community was destroyed and as many of three hundred people were killed. Nearly one hundred years later, the race massacre continues to reverberate. On Monday May 24th at 6 p.m. the Newburgh Free Library will host a virtual presentation and community discussion in remembrance of the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre led by University of Oklahoma Black History Professor, Dr. Karlos Hill. Dr. Hill’s presentation will discuss the history of the race massacre, the lessons the history offers, and the current-day legacies that must be confronted. The presentation will include photos from Dr. Hill's book The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre: A Photographic History.
Following the presentation participants will be invited to engage in a discussion about when they first learned of the Tulsa Race Massacre and a discussion on BIPOC history that has often been overlooked by American history curricula.
