Update for NFA Families - Classes Resume on Monday

Dear Newburgh Free Academy scholars, families, faculty, and staff,

I’m writing to provide you with additional information and resources that may help our students process an incident that took place in the local community earlier this week. The physical and emotional safety of everyone who enters our school and district buildings remains our highest priority. The last two days have been a productive way for our faculty and staff to reflect on how we can better serve our children as a school community. It is important to remember that we cannot do this alone. We each play a crucial role in supporting and nurturing our children.

Beginning on Monday, November 22nd, all students will return to their Newburgh Free Academy campus at their regularly scheduled time. Below, you will find more information about the work that was done over the last two days and how we will begin to move forward.

During the last two days, we have worked with our faculty and staff to explore quantitative and anecdotal data about what our students need right now. We have learned that students at our high schools: 

• Are having difficulty describing their feelings 
• Struggle to articulate a disagreement with others without having an argument 
• Tend to feel worried  

The recent acts of violence in the community has prompted the immediate need to pause and once again, reflect on the needs of our student body, faculty and staff in relation to the effectiveness of current procedures and routines to provide a safe and secure learning environment. As families, a district, and as individual school buildings, we all have work to do. 

Families

Our Family and Community Engagement Team has put together resources that families can utilize with their children. Those resources can be accessed here. Our hope is that families throughout the district will utilize these resources to discuss critical issues with their children. Our schools and the district continue to be a resource if families need help in guiding these conversations with their children.

Schools

The last two days have provided an opportunity for our faculty, staff, and administrators to develop strategies to better support our scholars as they continue to navigate re-entry into our school buildings after nearly two years of isolation and uncertainty. Additionally, mitigation strategies that are in place due to the global health pandemic were analyzed. Some operational routines will begin to shift back to previous protocols. Instructional shifts in the classroom are also being considered that may provide increased opportunity for student voice and opportunities to collaborate to learn those crucial skills that our students express the need for. 

The District and Community Organizations

The district continues to respond to the needs of our student body, faculty and staff. We are fortunate to have a good working relationship with local law enforcement and several community agencies throughout the district municipalities and Orange County. We will continue to work together with these organizations to develop a multi-tiered layer of support that will enhance the systems that are currently in place. 

The vision of the NECSD remains, “Through the work of all, we will achieve inclusive excellence.” Each and everyone of us owns a role in supporting and guiding our scholars to become leaders beyond Academy Field.

Estimados académicos, familias, profesores y personal de Newburgh Free Academy:

Le escribo para brindarle información y recursos adicionales que pueden ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a procesar un incidente que tuvo lugar en la comunidad local a principios de esta semana. La seguridad física y emocional de todos los que ingresan a nuestra escuela y los edificios del distrito sigue siendo nuestra máxima prioridad. Los últimos dos días han sido una forma productiva para que nuestros profesores y personal reflexionen sobre cómo podemos servir mejor a nuestros niños como comunidad escolar. Es importante recordar que no podemos hacer esto solos. Cada uno de nosotros juega un papel crucial en el apoyo y la crianza de nuestros hijos.

A partir del lunes 22 de noviembre, todos los estudiantes regresarán a su campus de Newburgh Free Academy a la hora programada regularmente. A continuación, encontrará más información sobre el trabajo que se realizó durante los dos últimos días y cómo comenzaremos a avanzar.

Durante los últimos dos días, hemos trabajado con nuestra facultad y personal para explorar datos cuantitativos y anecdóticos sobre lo que nuestros estudiantes necesitan en este momento. Hemos aprendido que los estudiantes de nuestras escuelas secundarias:

- Tienen dificultad para describir sus sentimientos.
- Luchar por articular un desacuerdo con los demás sin tener una discusión.
- Tiende a sentirse preocupado

Los recientes actos de violencia en la comunidad han provocado la necesidad inmediata de hacer una pausa y, una vez más, reflexionar sobre las necesidades de nuestro cuerpo estudiantil, profesores y personal en relación con la eficacia de los procedimientos y rutinas actuales para proporcionar un entorno de aprendizaje seguro y protegido. Como familias, como distrito y como edificios escolares individuales, todos tenemos trabajo que hacer.

Familias
Nuestro equipo de participación de la familia y la comunidad ha reunido recursos que las familias pueden utilizar con sus hijos. Puede acceder a esos recursos aquí. Nuestra esperanza es que las familias de todo el distrito utilicen estos recursos para discutir temas críticos con sus hijos. Nuestras escuelas y el distrito continúan siendo un recurso si las familias necesitan ayuda para guiar estas conversaciones con sus hijos.

Escuelas
Los últimos dos días han brindado una oportunidad para que nuestra facultad, personal y administradores desarrollen estrategias para apoyar mejor a nuestros estudiantes mientras continúan navegando por el reingreso a nuestros edificios escolares después de casi dos años de aislamiento e incertidumbre. Además, se analizaron las estrategias de mitigación que están en marcha debido a la pandemia de salud mundial. Algunas rutinas operativas comenzarán a volver a los protocolos anteriores. También se están considerando cambios de instrucción en el aula que pueden brindar una mayor oportunidad para la voz de los estudiantes y oportunidades para colaborar para aprender esas habilidades cruciales que nuestros estudiantes expresan la necesidad.

El distrito y las organizaciones comunitarias
El distrito continúa respondiendo a las necesidades de nuestro cuerpo estudiantil, cuerpo docente y personal. Tenemos la suerte de tener una buena relación de trabajo con la policía local y varias agencias comunitarias en los municipios del distrito y el condado de Orange. Continuaremos trabajando junto con estas organizaciones para desarrollar una capa de soporte de varios niveles que mejorará los sistemas que están actualmente en funcionamiento.

La visión de la NECSD sigue siendo: "A través del trabajo de todos, lograremos la excelencia inclusiva". Todos y cada uno de nosotros tenemos un papel en el apoyo y la orientación de nuestros estudiantes para que se conviertan en líderes más allá de Academy Field.
