Dear middle and high school students and families, 

I have heard from members of our community who have expressed concerns about student behavior and the impact it has on learning environments in our school communities. Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns. I want to maintain regular communication with you about our efforts to address student safety. Additionally, I need to ask for your help in the important work of supporting our children.

The ongoing pandemic has severely impacted the educational system in several different ways across the nation. We are not alone in these struggles. Schools across the country are facing similar challenges. This is comforting only in the fact that we have a large network of districts to gather information from to improve our support systems and strategies as we continue to work together to help our students succeed, especially during these difficult times. 

A large percentage of returning students this year are exhibiting behavioral and social emotional  needs resulting from the feeling of loss, lack of a structured learning environment, missed opportunities for guided emotional growth and development, fewer peer relationships, and a variety of other characteristics that are unique for their grade level. In addition to these needs, a large percentage of our students are experiencing a difficult time engaging in the challenging instruction provided in the classrooms as a result of the interruption to the instructional delivery model over the course of the past few years. 

Our teachers address a wide range of outcomes during each and every period:

• Intensive learning loss for some 
• Intensive learning for those on grade level 
• Intensive learning for those prepared for more challenging standards 

Our teachers are also sensitive to the social, emotional, and mental health needs of our students by designing learning opportunities that address these needs incorporated into their lessons. 

Administrators are tirelessly working to ensure a learning environment that supports the needs of our students and provides the guidance and leadership our teachers need in order to be successful. They are addressing parent concerns, implementing new structures and protocols responsive to the current world we live in, and creating pandemic safe, collaborative opportunities for faculty and staff.  

Our security staff interacts with our students throughout the day. For the most part, students are extremely respectful and understand the role these employees play in providing a safe school. However, there is a small population of students who are less respectful. Please speak with your child(ren) to reinforce the role of our security monitors and support our request that they are respected. 

As we move into the second marking period we are asking that you review the 2021-2022 District Code of Conduct with your child(ren). Strict adherence to the Code of Conduct will be enforced as we must continue to apply a relentless approach to the instructional program. 

It is important that our students understand the impact of their behavior. We rely on parents and families to act in collaboration to support our efforts to educate each student. Please speak with your child(ren) to be sure they understand the expectations. Consider a focus on the following topics in the Code of Conduct: Insubordination, verbal altercation, physical altercation, disruption to education and the consequences these behaviors will have should students choose to act in this manner.

The district will continue to focus on re-entry after a disciplinary pause, to the instructional program for students that this impacts. Whether they are returning from removal from class, an in-school suspension, or an out-of-school suspension, our PPS team will meet with the students to create a successful plan for returning to the classrooms with knowledge of replacement behaviors. 

This week you will see increased security presence at each campus of the high school. This additional staffing will be to monitor the perimeter of each school, support a smooth transition of students from class to class, and ensure students have a safe and enjoyable experience in the cafeteria.

Estimados estudiantes y familias de secundaria y preparatoria,

He escuchado de miembros de nuestra comunidad que han expresado preocupaciones sobre el comportamiento de los estudiantes y el impacto que tiene en los entornos de aprendizaje en nuestras comunidades escolares. Gracias por comunicarse y compartir sus inquietudes. Quiero mantener una comunicación regular con usted sobre nuestros esfuerzos para abordar la seguridad de los estudiantes. Además, necesito pedir su ayuda en el importante trabajo de apoyar a nuestros niños.

La pandemia en curso ha afectado gravemente al sistema educativo de varias formas diferentes en todo el país. No estamos solos en estas luchas. Las escuelas de todo el país se enfrentan a desafíos similares. Esto es reconfortante solo por el hecho de que tenemos una gran red de distritos para recopilar información para mejorar nuestros sistemas y estrategias de apoyo mientras continuamos trabajando juntos para ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a tener éxito, especialmente durante estos tiempos difíciles.

Un gran porcentaje de los estudiantes que regresan este año exhiben necesidades de comportamiento y socioemocionales como resultado del sentimiento de pérdida, la falta de un ambiente de aprendizaje estructurado, oportunidades perdidas para el crecimiento y desarrollo emocional guiado, menos relaciones con los compañeros y una variedad de otras características que son único para su nivel de grado. Además de estas necesidades, un gran porcentaje de nuestros estudiantes están experimentando dificultades para participar en la instrucción desafiante que se brinda en las aulas como resultado de la interrupción del modelo de enseñanza en el transcurso de los últimos años.

Nuestros profesores abordan una amplia gama de resultados durante todos y cada uno de los períodos:
-- Pérdida intensiva de aprendizaje para algunos
-- Aprendizaje intensivo para aquellos a nivel de grado
-- Aprendizaje intensivo para aquellos preparados para estándares más desafiantes

Nuestros maestros también son sensibles a las necesidades de salud social, emocional y mental de nuestros estudiantes al diseñar oportunidades de aprendizaje que aborden estas necesidades incorporadas en sus lecciones.

Los administradores trabajan incansablemente para garantizar un entorno de aprendizaje que respalde las necesidades de nuestros estudiantes y brinde la orientación y el liderazgo que nuestros maestros necesitan para tener éxito. Están abordando las preocupaciones de los padres, implementando nuevas estructuras y protocolos que responden al mundo actual en el que vivimos y creando oportunidades de colaboración seguras para las pandemias para los profesores y el personal.

Nuestro personal de seguridad interactúa con nuestros estudiantes durante todo el día. En su mayor parte, los estudiantes son extremadamente respetuosos y comprenden el papel que estos empleados desempeñan para brindar una escuela segura. Sin embargo, hay una pequeña población de estudiantes que son menos respetuosos. Hable con su (s) hijo (s) para reforzar el papel de nuestros monitores de seguridad y respalde nuestra solicitud de que sean respetados.

A medida que avanzamos hacia el segundo período de calificaciones, le pedimos que revise el Código de Conducta del Distrito 2021-2022 con su (s) hijo (s). Se hará cumplir estrictamente el Código de Conducta ya que debemos continuar aplicando un enfoque implacable al programa de instrucción.

Es importante que nuestros estudiantes comprendan el impacto de su comportamiento. Dependemos de que los padres y las familias actúen en colaboración para apoyar nuestros esfuerzos por educar a cada estudiante. Hable con su (s) hijo (s) para asegurarse de que comprendan las expectativas. Considere un enfoque en los siguientes temas en el Código de Conducta: Insubordinación, altercado verbal, altercado físico, interrupción de la educación y las consecuencias que estos comportamientos tendrán si los estudiantes eligen actuar de esta manera.

El distrito continuará enfocándose en el reingreso después de una pausa disciplinaria, al programa de instrucción para los estudiantes que esto impacta. Ya sea que regresen de ser removidos de la clase, una suspensión dentro de la escuela o una suspensión fuera de la escuela, nuestro equipo de PPS se reunirá con los estudiantes para crear un plan exitoso para regresar a las aulas con conocimiento de los comportamientos de reemplazo.

Esta semana verá una mayor presencia de seguridad en cada campus de la escuela secundaria. Esta dotación de personal adicional será para monitorear el perímetro de cada escuela, apoyar una transición sin problemas de los estudiantes de una clase a otra y garantizar que los estudiantes tengan una experiencia segura y agradable en la cafetería.
