Letter to South Middle School Families Regarding Alleged Threat

Dear South Middle School students, families, faculty, and staff,

The safety and well-being of your child(ren) is our highest priority. I am writing to inform you about an alleged threat of violence that was made at South Middle School this morning. It is alleged that a student made a statement about an act of violence that alarmed a fellow student. We are thankful to our students, faculty, and staff who acted quickly to report the concern, so our administration could begin an immediate investigation and contact local authorities as appropriate. 

Local law enforcement is conducting an investigation. The student in question has been removed from the school building at this time. Please join with our faculty and staff to remind families to review the NECSD Code of Conduct with their child(ren) and to encourage your child(ren) to think before they act.

Please encourage your children to speak with an adult like a parent/guardian, teacher, guidance counselor, social worker, coach, or administrator if they have information that they would like to share. The district often learns of this information from students. We commend their bravery for speaking with an adult when they felt that something was not right. The vision of the district is: “Through the work of all, we will achieve inclusive excellence.” This vision includes everyone in our NECSD community. 

Additionally, parents and guardians should discuss the consequences of making statements of violence with their children. The words that people choose to use matters and can have long-lasting consequences, regardless of whether they are made in a joking manner or with the intended seriousness of those words. Local law enforcement agencies and district personnel that follow up on unintended threats take valuable time and focus away from other student issues, and can even distract from events that might truly pose a safety threat.

If you see or hear of any threat, please contact us immediately and directly. Posting on social media is not the best way to investigate and resolve a concern. Sharing information that you or your child(ren) are aware of with the district officials enables our staff to act quickly and promotes a better opportunity for safety. We take every threat that we receive seriously, involve local law enforcement, and implement the necessary disciplinary consequences. We legally cannot comment on disciplinary action that is taken or share information about individual students. However, please trust that we are working quickly and collaborating with authorities to provide a safe learning environment for all of our scholars and educators.
