Updated: Statement about Altercation at Athletic Event

Statement: Sunday, December 19, 2021 at 3:35pm

As you are aware, student altercations have been a topic of conversation throughout the country this school year. This weekend, there was an altercation at an athletic event involving a few of our students and multiple members of another team. Overnight, district administrators and faculty have reviewed footage and talked to our students. Further conversations will continue upon return to school on Monday, December 20.

We will continue to work with all of our students about managing their emotions and constructive ways to resolve conflict.

The NFA Boys Basketball team was originally scheduled to play Bishop Loughlin High School on Wednesday, December 22nd. After a schedule change at a tournament held on Saturday, December 18th, the two teams played each other, resulting in the cancellation of the game scheduled for Wednesday. The two teams are in different sections/leagues, but were scheduled to play each other as an opportunity for each team to face different athletic competition to enhance their athletic abilities.

As you are aware, student altercations have been a topic of conversation throughout the country this school year. This weekend, there was an altercation at a basketball tournament involving a few of our students and multiple members of another team.

On Saturday night, district administrators and faculty reviewed footage and talked to our students and coaches. While we are disturbed by the incident that occurred, we do not believe our students initiated the altercation and have recognized occasions where our students made attempts to walk away that should be highlighted.

We are disappointed by the lack of security that was provided at the event and in the future, the district will assess each event and based on need, will provide our own security monitors for our students. We will continue to work with the other high school involved after their winter break to further investigate and adjust our determinations if needed.

We will continue to work with all of our students about managing their emotions and constructive ways to resolve conflict.

ATTENTION: Are your scholars or colleagues doing something great? Please contact the district Communications Team at communications@necsd.net. We’d love to visit your class or event and/or post your pictures and recap to highlight the amazing accomplishments throughout our district!
