Letter Regarding Return to In-Person Learning for January 3, 2022

Dear NECSD students, families, faculty, and staff,

We hope you are having a restful winter break and preparing for a successful new year. I am writing to provide some important information for the return to in-person learning on Monday, January 3, 2022. The district has been monitoring the data daily throughout winter recess and will continue to do so throughout the weekend. If any changes arise for a school building with regard to returning to in-person learning, those changes will be communicated to members of that school building as soon as possible. Please keep in mind, we can only successfully return to in-person learning with the help and collaboration of each member of our NECSD community. 

As you may have heard, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) made updates and shortened the recommended isolation and quarantine period for the general public on December 27, 2021. The NYS Department of Health has also provided similar guidance. However, at this time, the Orange County Department of Health has not adopted these guidelines and therefore the NECSD’s protocol for returning to work/school following testing positive for COVID-19 will remain the same. Any changes to current protocols will be communicated if/when they are received. 

In order to support a smooth return to in-person learning, all NECSD employees, students and visitors returning to in-person learning on Monday, January 3, 2022, must:

• Take their temperature and assess for symptoms prior to getting on the bus and/or arriving at the school/district building (whichever comes first). Anyone with a temperature more than fever (100.4◦F), cough, shortness of breath, or other symptoms of COVID-19 should remain home and contact their school nurse.

On December 31, 2021, the district received at-home test kits and will share information about how those kits will be distributed as those details are finalized. Additionally, temperature checks upon entry to each school/district building for all individuals will resume in the middle of next week. 

A few reminders that have not changed from previous guidance and protocols:

• All people, regardless of vaccination status, are required to wear a mask in all school/district buildings, with minimal exceptions (NYSDOH/OCDOH). 
• You quarantine when you might have been exposed to the virus and may or may not have been infected (CDC).
• You isolate when you have been infected with the virus, even if you don’t have symptoms (CDC).

The district continues to work with local partners to offer a vaccine distribution to people 5 years of age and older. We anticipate another distribution in mid-to-late January. More information will be shared with our NECSD community at that time. Information about vaccination distributions in Orange County can be found here. Please continue to wash your hands, watch your distance, and wear a mask when you are in close proximity to others. Together, we can overcome this public health pandemic.

Esperamos que esté disfrutando de unas tranquilas vacaciones de invierno y se esté preparando para un nuevo año exitoso. Le escribo para proporcionar información importante para el regreso al aprendizaje en persona el lunes 3 de enero de 2022. El distrito ha estado monitoreando los datos diariamente durante el receso de invierno y continuará haciéndolo durante el fin de semana. Si surge algún cambio para un edificio escolar con respecto al regreso al aprendizaje en persona, esos cambios se comunicarán a los miembros de ese edificio escolar lo antes posible. Tenga en cuenta que solo podemos regresar con éxito al aprendizaje en persona con la ayuda y la colaboración de cada miembro de nuestra comunidad NECSD.

Como habrás escuchado, los Centros para el Control de Enfermedades (CDC) realizaron actualizaciones y acortaron el período recomendado de aislamiento y cuarentena para el público en general el 27 de diciembre de 2021. El Departamento de Salud del Estado de Nueva York también ha proporcionado una guía similar.
