Letter from NFA Principals/Assembly tomorrow, Monday, June 13th

June 12, 2022

Dear Newburgh Free Academy students, families, faculty, and staff,

We are aware that a group of employees have engaged in an exchange of commentary on Facebook that is reasonably perceived as offensive and racially insensitive, particularly towards the Black Community. We recognize that people may have a different response to this post given personal relationships or experiences. We would like to be abundantly clear we do not condone or permit racism, intolerance, or discrimination in any form at Newburgh Free Academy. Our top priority is creating an environment where all our students are safe, respected, and feel valued. We are committed to addressing racism, intolerance, and discrimination swiftly and with the appropriate action.

We cannot provide specific details with regard to employees, but we can assure you that we will take the necessary actions to demonstrate the respect we have for our diverse community. We are thankful for those who have brought their concerns to our attention and encourage our entire community to continue to speak out against inappropriate actions such as this.

We also know that this is not the first incident that has occurred recently in our school and district community where our Black community has been negatively targeted. We are working to support our students, faculty, and staff in ways that are impactful and appropriate.

Tomorrow, Monday, June 13, 2022, there will be an assembly for all Newburgh Free Academy students, faculty, and staff during the day. Any student who would like to speak with someone upon arrival at school should visit their School Counselor, Social Worker, School Psychologist, or grade level administrator.

We know that our community is hurting. We plan to make several efforts throughout these last weeks of school to listen to and support both students and our colleagues. Our hope is that our response to these recent events will establish a stronger foundation for a healthy and more respectful community.

Sincerely,

Matteo Doddo and Edgar Glascott

Co-Principals, Newburgh Free Academy

Sinceramente,

Matteo Doddo y Edgar Glascott

Codirectores, Newburgh Free Academy
