Important Letter Concerning Chromebooks and Chargers for All Students

September 23, 2022

Dear NECSD students and families,

In 2018, the Newburgh Enlarged City School District issued Chromebooks to students in grades 3-10. By 2020, each student throughout our school district received a Chromebook. Devices are updated when students are in 3rd grade, 6th  grade and 9th grade, so students have access to fully functioning devices throughout their K-12 career.

We are pleased that a majority of our students appreciate these resources and appropriately care for their devices. As part of the district’s focus on digital citizenship and responsibility, our Instructional Technology Facilitators and Microtechnicians will be implementing lessons and intervention measures for students who repeatedly report devices are lost, stolen, or damaged.  After various interventions, a student may be charged to replace their device and/or charger. A student may lose the privilege of taking their device home with them if there are repeated damaged and lost devices/chargers. They will be afforded loaners while school is in session on a first come, first served basis. Scholars are welcome to stay after school or use the Newburgh Free Library should they lose their privilege of taking a Chromebook home, and need access to a device outside of the normal school day. This approach is intended to be proactive and educational for our students as our society increasingly relies on the use of technology.

The district will no longer provide repeated replacement for chargers or devices without intervention, investigation, or parental contact. We are confident that our families and educators will act as partners to help our students take responsibility for their learning, which includes taking care of their devices.

Sincerely,
Ms. Onyx Peterson
Executive Director of Information and Technology, CIO/DPO

Sinceramente,
Sra. Onyx Peterson
Director Ejecutivo de Información y Tecnología, CIO/DPO
