Scholars at Balmville Host Special Guests for Read Across America Day
To celebrate Read Across America Day, Balmville students were treated to a reading from the honorable Judge Matthews-Forbes of the City of Newburgh, and the court's therapy dog, Sierra and her handler Derek Brown. Judge Matthews-Forbes shared the story of Thurgood Marshall, who was a lawyer and judge, just like her! She led an inspiring discussion about following your passions, being fair and inclusive, as well as allowing everyone to have the same rights. She took the time to ask every child about the career path they hope to follow and gave them each warm feedback. Balmville students were also able to and give commands and treats to Sierra, and of course give some cuddles and love. Students learned that Sierra brings comfort to those feeling anxious or nervous in our Newburgh city court.
