NFA Celebrates Senior Coaches of Unified Basketball
On Thursday, May 18th, the Newburgh Free Academy (NFA) Unified Basketball Team celebrated their senior student coaches. Seniors Ava Aponte (not shown), Valerie Churns, Iezabell Cuello, Rylee Merli, Ayden Ortega, and Marissa Rounds posed at center court prior to the start of the game against the Arlington Unified Basketball Team. NFA also made sure to honor the senior members of the Arlington team by presenting them with Newburgh goodie bags.
In Unified Sports, teams are made up of people of similar age and ability. Student athletes act as players and coaches. That makes practices more fun and games more challenging and exciting for all. Having sport in common is just one more way that preconceptions and false ideas are swept away.
2023 marks the sixth year of Unified basketball in Section 9.
Unified Champion Schools promotes social inclusion by bringing together young people with and without intellectual disabilities on sports teams (Special Olympics Unified Sports) through inclusive student clubs, together in school or community-wide initiatives, and by fostering youth leadership.
Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.
The NFA Unified Basketball team is advised by Ms. Sandy Baines.
