Nearly 500,000 Minutes Read in Superintendent's Literacy Challenge
Students were recognized for their participation during the Superintendent's Literacy Challenge. More than 1,000 students participated, reading more than 500,000 minutes during the challenge. Students in grades K-8 who were recognized were selected by their schools for various reasons. Those recognized were celebrated with a certificate, books, and bookmarks to continue their love of reading!
Families engaging in reading activities at home can greatly improve the reading abilities of our scholars. Additional literacy initiatives will be coming soon. Stay tuned!
Recent studies show:
- Six additional minutes of reading per day can significantly improve kids’ reading performance.
- Children who read at least 20 minutes a day are exposed to almost 2 million words per year.
- 83% of the children who are read aloud to love it or like it a lot.
- The benefits of reading to children include increased activation in certain brain regions.
- Literature is a great way for kids to understand something without having to personally experience it.
