Temple Hill 8th Graders Reflect on September 11, 2001 through Poetry

Each year, on September 11th, Temple Hill Academy 8th grade English teachers, Ms. Caroline Schwind and Mrs. Rebecca Heller, teach their classes about the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the emotions felt, and the overwhelming sense of patriotism that occurred as a result. It is their hope that their students are able to grasp the magnitude of what occurred and that they will honor the memory of the victims and “never forget".

Despite being born over a decade after the tragedy, Elizabeth Neptune, Gabriella Jackson, and Clare Greaven Smith were so inspired, they each took it upon themselves to write poems reflecting on the events of September 11th. Each scholar was able to vividly capture the feeling of the day through their words. While it was not required for the students to write poems, their desire to share their thoughts reveal a patriotic sentiment that beats in the hearts and minds of many of Newburgh's young citizens.

September 11th: We'll Never Forget Our Fallen Heroes

by Elizabeth Neptune

8th Grader at Temple Hill Academy

The sky was blue, the day was bright

but then the world turned dark as night

The Towers fell, the people cried

Looking around, no place to hide

Smoke and ash filled the air.

People ran with fear and despair

We’ll never forget the ones we lost

and continue to pray for peace at all costs

Though time has passed, we still recall

the tragedy that shook us all

Disaster struck the Pentagon, and Flight 93

the World Trade Center became ground zero

We’ll never forget 9/11 and our fallen heroes.

Forever United

by Gabriella Jackson

8th Grader at Temple Hill Academy

In the city that never sleeps

A day etched into our hearts so deep

courage in the face of fear

unity, strength, and love appear

Heroes rising, selfless and brave

their sacrifices, our nation’s saved

through the darkness, a light will shine

remembering those we lost, we’ll intertwine.

Together we stand! United we stay!

Honoring the lives, forever we pray

In our hearts their spirits will soar

9/11- a day we will never ignore.

A Beautiful Morning

by Clare Greaven Smith

8th grader at Temple Hill Academy

It was a beautiful morning

sky blue and clear

robins singing their song

It was a beautiful world

nothing could go wrong

Until the blue sky wasn’t so blue

it was black

It wasn’t so clear anymore

We could  hardly open our eyes

There were no more

robins singing - only people screaming

who knew that a beautiful morning

could leave a nation mourning
