NECSD Celebrates School Social Work Week
March 3rd-9th is School Social Work Week! Social Workers have the privilege of providing support in many different environments, from practicing as private therapists to working for community agencies, hospitals, treatment centers, and advocacy groups. School Social Workers have the unique professional capacity to integrate their knowledge of mental health and family/community systems with their training in education. They are an educator, a facilitator, a liaison and a vital link between family, school and community.
A School Social Worker assists ALL students in learning skills and strategies that help them navigate their classroom, strengthen relationships with peers and adults, and ease academic frustrations. A School Social Worker assists families in understanding all aspects of the school environment, supports culturally-affirming and trauma-sensitive care, builds communication and dialogue between home and school, fosters connections to community resources, provides education related to mental health and social emotional learning and acts as an advocate for children and families. In times of crisis or need, a School Social Worker ensures that families and children are equipped and empowered with the resources, skills, support and knowledge they need to manage and work through challenges. Family and community connection and holistic support prepares our students to be best able to meet the academic challenges they face in the classroom.
