Storm King Art Center & Balmville Scholars Partnership
Students in Mrs. Garcia's class partnered with Storm King Art Center in a year-long project.
In the fall, docents from Storm King Art Center visited Balmville to introduce the scholars to artist Beatriz Cortez's piece of art The Volcano that Left and created constellation paintings to replicate Cortez's concept of perspective from space. Students then visited the museum to see the sculpture first hand.
After the visit, scholars were so interested in the project, a virtual meeting was set up where students met Beatriz Cortez and showed their artwork to her. Throughout the winter students participated in the first National Space Day, created their own constellation myth, researched a planet and wrote an argumentative postcard to NASA stating what they should spend money on to get to other planets.
Docents returned to Balmville introducing the new piece of art and assisted students in designing their own watercolor planet. After visiting the museum in the spring, scholars wanted to replicate the artwork. Using pool noodles and paper mache, scholars created their version of the artwork at Balmville.
To conclude their studies, students held a space day where they presented all of their work from throughout the school year and unveiled their piece of art!
