NFA Hosted 220 Area Students for Youth in Government Convention; Won Five Positions
NFA’ s Youth in Government Club hosted 220 students from neighboring districts, while winning 5 positions during the convention.
NFA Hosted the Steering Convention in November and helped Youth in Government celebrate its 80th year this year. At this convention, 11 neighboring schools came to Newburgh to give speeches and run for political office. The students gave a special welcome and round of applause to Mr. Matt Cook from Cornwall who will be retiring this year after being part of Youth in Government for 26 years.
The Convention started with Emily Reyes and Mike Clarke serving as emcees for the convention. This team welcomed the schools, led the pledge, and introduced the NFA Madrigals who sang the national anthem. Assistant Principal Mike Ragusa then gave a welcome from the administrative staff.
Youth in Government is broken into 2 political parties, The Peoples’ Party and The Citizens’ Party. One group held their convention in NFA’s auditorium and one held their convention in NFA’s library. At these conventions students give speeches running for offices from Congress to County clerk. NFA students Liam Baxter won in the Citizens’ Party for County Judge; Joeclyn Velasquez won in the Peoples’ Party for County Judge; Alexandra Crawford won for County Executive; Cora Kerin won for County Clerk; Jenell Rosales won for State Senator. Jenell also served as the Chairwoman for the convention until a new Chairperson was elected for this convention. Allison Castillo and Tina Wang came in second place for County Clerk and Governor respectively.
Mr. Abate and Mr. Underhill continue to be proud of the hard work and dedication of their students and how well they represented the Newburgh School District. We had many positive comments from our guests.
