Newburgh Free Academy Hosts 3rd Annual HBCU & Greek Life Celebration
Newburgh Free Academy, the School Counseling Department, and NFA Black History Club hosted its 3rd Annual College and Career event focusing on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Students and families were welcomed to learn about HBCUs and the purposes and benefits of African-American Greek fraternities and sororities, to strengthen their network, and to increase opportunities for college and career.
Historically Black Colleges and Universities are institutions that were established prior to 1964. The primary mission of HBCUs is to educate Black Americans by providing access to higher education.
There are currently 107 HBCUs serving more than 228,000 students throughout the country. While HBCUs historically only served Black Students, nearly a quarter of students enrolled in HBCUs are non-Black. HBCUs can be public or private institutions. For more information about HBCUs visit: hbcuconnect.com/colleges/
The program opened with the singing of the Black National Anthem and included opening remarks by City of Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey, a Student introduction, an informational video about HBCU & Greek Life, NFA Alumni Testimonials, Step/Stroll Performance by members of the Divine 9, a presentation by NECSD's My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Program Fellows, a Student Poem, and Closing remarks by Board of Education member, Mr. Philip Howard.
Participants Include:
The NFA Black History Club, NFA P-TECH, NFA West Student leadership team, NFA School School Counseling Department, NECSD Family And Community Engagement (FACE), NECSD GEARUP, Boys And Girls Club of Newburgh, and The National Pan Hellenic Council Of Mid-Hudson Valley.
